Intermediate Tricks
These are for when the easy tricks start to feel easy. You’ve got a few tricks you can do in your sleep, people have stopped asking “do it again,” and you want something with a bit more punch.
The step up here is mostly about two things. First, a few simple moves: a palm, a finger break, a false shuffle that keeps a card where you want it. Second, longer routines with more than one phase, where the spectator thinks the trick is over and then it isn’t. You’ll also find clever counting and mathematical principles dressed up as mind reading.
Learn the trick in pieces. Get the method right with the cards face up, so you can see what’s happening. Then turn them face down and add your patter. Only then speed up. A slow, confident trick beats a fast, nervous one every time.
Some I’m especially fond of: The Changing Card is a perfect first palming trick. Teleporting Aces and Trapped Trick are strong visual pieces, and The Year Game is a math trick that feels like real magic. If you want gentler material, the Easy Tricks are always there. If you’re hungry for more, the Expert Tricks are waiting.
