Math Tricks
If you liked puzzles at school, you’ll love this page. Every trick here works because of a bit of arithmetic hiding in plain sight: a count that always comes out the same, piles that add up to a number you already know, or a deal that quietly moves a card to a fixed position.
The nice thing about math tricks is that they can’t go wrong if you follow the steps. The hard part is making them not feel like a math lesson. Nobody is amazed by subtraction. So keep the counting brisk, give the spectator something to do, and put your energy into the reveal.
Practice these face up first. Watch where the important card goes during each deal and count along. Once you understand why it works, you’ll stop worrying about it, and that makes you a much more relaxed performer.
The Year Game is a great one to start with. Kathy’s Prediction turns a simple count into a prediction, and The Lazy Magician lets the spectator do all the work while you take the credit. Mental Agility works with any pack. Many math tricks are also Self-Working Tricks, and the Memory Tricks page has a few more number-crunchers.
